Laudamus is in its twentieth year and was formed as Wigan Girls Choir in 1992; it became a youth choir, inviting a male section in 2007 and has now ventured into the sphere of adult and youth sections.
Laudamus invites members without audition and young people from the age of ten. The choirs comprise of around twenty singers, rehearsing weekly and performing high level concerts of an all-encompassing repertoire.
The choir is based in Aspull, near Wigan, and although we perform out of the local area, we are very much interested in being part of the local community and in encouraging local people as well as those from further afield to both join and to hear us.
The choir has a unique educational flavour, in that youngsters, amateur singers and professionals sing together. The choir teaches music theory and aural training both individually and in groups to members. The sound is vibrant, warm and open and each choir member works with the conductor, Deborah Catterall for their own vocal freedom.
Over the years the choirs have performed at major venues including; the Royal Albert Hall, the Bridgewater Hall, Liverpool Cathedrals, Manchester Cathedral, Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris and many others, as well as hosting two National Youth Choral Festivals and has worked for BBC Radio 4 and BBC television. Many choir members have been, and still are, part of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain’s training and main choir.
Our composer in residence is David Lancaster, whose work we have premiered on several occasions, in particular at York St. John University with Championship Level, EYMS Brass Band, a collaboration we look forward to continuing.
Laudamus chamber choir, youth choir and ensemble strive towards consistent professional standards, while maintaining an atmosphere of friendship which can be heard through our sound. We continue to educate our younger and less experienced members to achieve professional standards and to enjoy music.
M.D Deborah Catterall
